2025 Summer Internship

The Tennessee River Gorge Trust (TRGT) is seeking undergraduate or graduate students with an interest in conservation for a summer internship program. This internship is designed to help students gain knowledge and experience that will aid them in their pursuit of a conservation career. The intern will gain valuable experience in land management, conservation, environmental research, and administrative duties. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual with an interest in conservation and other environmental-based work. The duties will include but are not limited to trail work, boundary marking, land management, equipment maintenance, marketing, and assistance with bird banding activities. Experience is not required but candidates should have an interest in the field of conservation. The skills related to this position will be learned and developed as interns work alongside our nationally recognized research and land management team. Applicants will need to be comfortable working in outdoor environments, navigating steep forested terrain, enduring extreme weather, and working cooperatively with professional colleagues. Interns will be selected through a competitive application process.

The Tennessee River Gorge Trust is 501c(3) land trust whose mission for the past 41 years has been “to conserve a healthy Tennessee River Gorge as a community treasure for generations.” We achieve this mission through protecting land, creating public access, engaging our community with the Tennessee River Gorge, and conducting environmental research to better understand the resources we protect. Requirements: We welcome any students to apply who have a serious interest in conservation, environmental research, or land management. Applicants should be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. An academic focus in biology, environmental science, outdoor recreation, or other related fields is preferred but not required. Possession of a valid US driver license is also preferred but not required. Applicants should be comfortable with working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, able to lift 50 pounds, and be able to hike several miles.

Internship Dates: May 19 – August 1

Compensation: Pay will be $15 an hour, personal protective gear will be provided, and, if needed, housing assistance can be provided.

Location: The Tennessee River Gorge Trust is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Interns will be working within Hamilton and Marion Counties in Tennessee.
